When you add content to your website or your social media profiles, you want to optimize it so that it is easily found and understood by people and search engines. Google can’t see your photos, so it doesn’t know what information your photo is displayed unless you tell it. Geotagging is a way to assign a specific geographical location to your photo to tell Google what location the photo is depicting. For example, you can set the geotag to be a specific location you choose, such as your law firm’s address.

Geotagging can literally put your law firm on Google Maps. Geotagging improves the search engine ranking for location-specific websites and businesses. Local SEO is important for law firms because most people are looking for legal services in a specific location - ie, Near Me. When your website very clearly tells search engines that you provide the exact service in the exact location someone is search for, you can rank higher than your competitor who offers the same service but didn’t add important signals such as geotag to show where they are located.

When you add geotags (also called a GPS coordinate) to your law firm's website images and your Google My Business images before you upload them, it will boost your local SEO and give you an edge over your competitors who aren't using this SEO strategy. The geographic location you tag the photo with can be a specific town or the exact longitude and latitude of your office. Depending on the tool you choose, you can also add local keywords and a photo name.

There are several free tools you can use to add the GEOtag to your images.

1. Your Smartphone
Your smartphone is a GPS device. If you don’t turn GPS tracking off, photos taken with your smartphone will have geotags already embedded. When you use your smartphone to take photos of your office, your team and your location and upload those photos to your website and GMB, your photos are geotagged and optimized for local search.

Note: you can optimize those photos even more by changing the file name to your keywords before your upload them, ie:

img123.jpg —> Your Legal Service | Your City

2. GeoImgr
GeoImgr is a simple tool for geotagging photos. You can add geo location information to JPG photos in the EXIF header of the image file, and easily geotag photos with new coordinates.

3. GeoSetter
GeoSetter is a free tool for Windows computers to add geo data to photos taken with a camera.

Once you update your Google My Business profile with geotagged photos, it should help your profile rank higher in Google SERPs and on Google Maps. When you add geotagged images to your website, it will help your law firm’s website rank higher in local search results.
